Art Talks: Author, Thanh Duong Boyer, at MVAC

October 20 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

MVAC Art Talks Features Author Thanh Duong Boyer

Mountain Valley Arts Council invites the public to hear Thanh Duong Boyer, author of the book The Ground Kisser on October 20th from 12:30 – 1:30 PM at the MVAC Gallery at 440 Gunter Avenue.

Thanh Duong Boyer shared her incredible life story with many people through the years, and each time they encouraged her to write it in a book. She likes to say she would “rather clean a public toilet,” yet she realized that her survival against incredible odds, gave encouragement and hope to others. She enlisted an author, Lisa Worthey Smith, to help with the project, and together they penned The Ground Kisser, published April, 2019. Lisa likes to tell people “this is the Vietnam story you haven’t heard and the little girl you won’t forget.”

A 2018 NGCWC Georgia Peach Award winner, and Amazon bestseller, The Ground Kisser is the inspiring true story of one little girl who became one of the Vietnamese boat people.

Born to a wealthy family in the Mekong Delta of South Vietnam, her first bath was in champagne. When the US military pulled out their support, Saigon and all of South Vietnam with it fell into Communist control. Her life turned upside down when the new government nationalized everything and left them in poverty.

Through tremendous sacrifice, her parents gave all they had to buy her boat passage to Australia where she could live in freedom again. The boat didn’t make it, pirates saw to that. But, by the grace of God, her story didn’t end there, though death knocked at her door more than once.

Her story is one of courage, sacrifice, and love of family. Her service to our community and our military earned her invitations to speak and write her story in a book

Thanh and her husband live in North Alabama where they are actively involved in various ministries.

Reviews

The Hon. Tommy Battle, mayor of Huntsville, AL; “The book should be required reading for all students–for all Americans. It is said that ‘all life is comparison.’ When people compare standards of living, we realize how fortunate we are. This book puts an exclamation mark on what it means to live in America.”

Richard Judy, Author of THRU: An Appalachian Trail Love Story; “The Ground Kisser is a sure cure for anyone jaded by privileged American life.”

Lenora Worth, NYT bestselling author; “At a time when our nation seems constantly divided and full of hatred and fear, this book brought me a new hope … you will not be disappointed.”

The free monthly Art Talks series is supported by MVAC members, corporate sponsors, Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the City of Guntersville.
